'Boricuan' Times is an anthology of English literature considered for the Puerto Rican ESL classrooms and contexts. The book compiles a series of short stories, articles, and other works that depict common situations of the daily school life of Puerto Rican students as well as other social issues in which adolescents become involved with the laws and norms of society. These works provide valuable thoughts and guidelines for students to learn more about themselves, their school environments, and about the system of moral values and ethical principles that characterize the modern Puerto Rican culture and society. 'Boricuan' Times is a venture into a new kind of English literature for the common Puerto Rican student population. All of the short stories presented here contextualize the relevance and pertinence of familiar school and community environments, which facilitate the students' understanding and involvement with the readings. This, in turn, brings out the best of studnets' prior knowledge and experiences into the ESL class, and thus, allows them to understand, work and participate in the class willingly and not forced. Some of the unique features of these short stories include: simple and userfriendly vocabulary, Spanish titles, Spanish colloquial terms and expressions (to ease understanding), names of local places and people (schools, avenues, etc.), onomatopeic structures, and most importantlu, Puerto Rican school and community contexts. 'Boricuan' Times hopes to become the pioneer of many other works to come that will use and teach the English language in the ESL classroom to promote Puerto Rica culture. In this way, our students will enhance their reading skills, and develop a greater sense of appreciation and understanding for English literature while reading and learning about Puerto Rican contexts in English.
